A non-governmental organization, Atmosfair Sav80 Clean Cookingstoves has sensitized women in Akwa Ibom State on the negative impact of climate change on their health and the environment. The organization has also introduced the women to clean cookingstoves, a health and environmental-friendly cooking product developed by the NGO to help mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
Speaking during the programme which held at Four Points By Sheraton Hotel, Ikot Ekpene, at the weekend, the Chairman, Advisory Board of Atmosfair Climate and Sustainability, an NGO based in Germany, Amb. Faruk Yabo, said the adverse effects of climate change exacerbated by human activities had given the nations of the world a responsibility to work out remedial measures to cushion these effects.
Amb. Yabo said it was on this premise that Atmosfair Sav80 Clean Cookingstoves chose Akwa Ibom State out of all the states in the South-South Geo-political Zone to create the awareness to help retain the green environment of the state, as well as ensure good health for the women whom he noted are the first front users of firewood to cook.
He therefore, called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to seek solutions to the challenges posed by the menace, by harnessing the gas deposits in the state which he noted would be in the overall benefits of humans and the environment.
Also highlighting the health hazards of using firewood, especially by rural women to cook, the Director General, National Council on Climate Change, Dr. Salisu Dahiru however stated that the availability of the clean cookingstoves would help a long way in reducing the adverse impact of climate change, as the product burns faster and with less smoke.
He therefore, urged the other NGOs to direct their attention to this product as a contribution to mitigating impacts of climate change on human environment.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Iquo Abia, who represented the state government said the state had invested so much in addressing issues of the environment, in response to the present climate change realities.
She therefore, appreciated Atmosfair Sav80 Clean Cookingstoves and its partners, National Council on Climate Change, National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Federal Ministry of Environment, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure and other bodies for carrying out the sensitization in the state.
Over four hundred women across the state were taken through a demonstration session which showed how the Sav80 Clean Cookingstoves are used in homes. The products were also given out to some participants.
Dignitaries at the one- day programme include; State Project Coordinator, NEWMAP, Dr. Ubong Harrison; Paramount Rulers of Ikot Ekpene, HRM Okuku Okon Udo Ukut; Etim Ekpo, HRM Okuku (Prof.) Amanam A. Udo; Oruk Anam, HRM Akuku (Engr.) J. J. Obosi, among others.
