The Federal Road Safety Commission ( FRSC) has decorated AKwa Ibom state Commisioner for works and Fire Service Prof Eno Ibanga as Special Marshall for the corps in the state .
Performing the decoration ceremony at the office of the Works Commissioner in Uyo on Thursday, the Corp Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Abuja CM Boboye Oyeyemi said the decoration was based on the contribution of Prof Eno Ibanga to the Road Safety corps in the state.
Oyeyemi who was represented by the Port Harcourt zonal commander of Road Safety Corps Owoade Jonathan commended the works Commisioner for supervising the building of good roads across the state which has helped in the safety of road users
Oyeyemi who described Akwa Ibom as one of safest state and most pleasurable state to drive in, by long distant drivers in Nigeria, said that the news of Professor Eno Ibanga’s support to the Akwa Ibom State command of the Corp is pleasing to the headquarters of the command.
“Akwa Ibom State is one of the safest states in this country and for long distant drivers, immediately you enter Akwa Ibom, the ride becomes very pleasurable because of good roads and near absence of portholes on the highways”.
He said that road safety is a shared responsibility of all citizens, and appreciated the Works Commissioner for playing his own role.
“The Corp Marshall in Abuja instructed me to personally come and decorate Professor Eno Ibanga as Honourary Special Marshall of the Commission. The duty of road safety is a shared responsibility and the Commission is very appreciative of Professor Ibanga for playing his role by always coming to the aid of the Akwa Ibom State command whenever we beckon on him”.
He warned car owners and commercial drivers to stick strictly to safety rules.
“Don’t make phone calls while driving. Women should not carry babies on their laps while driving because if there is an emergency the baby may have spinal cord injury. Also, the renewal of drivers license helps the Commission to test a driver and ascertain if his eyes, character and health are still fit for him or her to be licensed. This is why we insist on renewal of drivers license”. He exhorted.
However, the works Commisioner Prof Eno Ibanga said he had dedicated the honour to his boss, Governor Udom Emmanuel, adding that since the governor assumed office in 2015, he has ensured safety and serenity in Akwa Ibom State.
Ibianga observed that building of road Infrastructure in the state has ensured safety of road users and made the state a destination of choice in the country.
His words, “the real beauty of a state or city is in the safety. That is why I dedicate this honour to Governor Udom Emmanuel. Since our Governor assumed office in 2015, the safety and serenity of Akwa Ibom State has always topped his agenda. Akwa Ibom State is currently retaining the batch as the cleanest state in Nigeria for the third year, and the safety of this state in the committee of states in the country is what has made us the destination of choice in Nigeria of today”.
Ibanga explained that the present state government has constructed hundreds of roads, and would soon commission about twenty new roads to enhance hitch free movement across the state.
The Commissioner noted that the encroachment of major roads and highways across the state by traders is dangerous to the safety of road users.
He disclosed that the state government at the last state executive meeting had taken a drastic decision to permanently displace traders from the highways.
