It was a gathering of industry experts, academics and technocrats at the Four Points by Sharaton, Ikot Ekpene on Friday August 8, for the inauguration of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Uyo Section 255.
The event which attracted SPEI and Council Leadership, featured keynote address, cultural display, cutting of cake among others.
Welcoming participants, the Chairman, SPE Uyo Section, Nkese Essien noted that since Akwa Ibom State has stood at the forefront of Nigeria’s petroleum industry, establishing an SPE section in Uyo reflects not only local capabilities but readiness to deepen professional development, drive technical excellence, and engage meaningfully with communities.

The chairman averred that the inauguration of the section aligns with SPE’s vision of strengthening professional networks and fostering collaboration across Africa.
He commended SPEI President, African Regional Director, BoT Chair, Council Chair, members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, colleagues, friends, and industry partners for their support.
“This milestone is more than just institutional growth; it is a strategic advancement for Nigeria’s energy sector, particularly in a region that plays a vital role in the nation’s oil and gas production.
“The Uyo Section stands as a bridge-connecting technical professionals across the Niger Delta with global industry standards and innovations. Given our region’s proximity to major oil operations and unique geological characteristics, this section is strategically positioned to contribute solutions to regional and continental energy challenges.
“From deep-water operations and enhanced oil recovery to digitization and environmental stewardship, the Uyo Section will serve as a platform for shared experiences and technical problem-solving tailored to the realities of our industry. It also provides a vital link between international oil companies, indigenous firms, service providers, and academia enabling the collaboration necessary to navigate complex industry dynamics.
“One of our core mandates is to drive professional development. Through Monthly Technical Meetings, Distinguished Lecture Series, workshops, and seminars, we will ensure members stay current with industry advancements. Our focus will include both traditional domains – such as reservoir management, drilling, and production optimization as well as emerging areas like digital transformation, AI applications, and energy transition strategies.
“We also recognize the importance of soft skills, leadership, and entrepreneurship in the growth of today’s petroleum engineer. By supporting mentorship and structured knowledge transfer between seasoned professionals and young engineers, we aim to build a skilled, confident, and future-ready workforce.
“We will prioritize scholarship programs, internship opportunities, and collaborative projects with institutions such as the University of Uyo and Akwa Ibom State University to nurture the next generation of energy professionals.”
In his keynote address, Director, SPE Africa Region, Riverson Oppong commended SPE Uyo for commitment in enhancing image of the organization.
He urged them to demonstrate showmanship in their field of calling.
Olivier Houzé 2025 SPE President who served as the Special Guest of Honour, revealed that there is career in SPE for members.
Houzé noted that energy transition in this era will be faster than previous transitions and urged everyone to brace up.
Presenting a goodwill message on behalf of Commissioner for Environment, Engr Anietie Emah, Head of Petroleum and Mineral Resources who represented the Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources Hon. Nsikak Ekong said as a ministry, they recognise the significance of private organization.
He noted that the ministry is poised for collaboration with industry players in oil and gas sector, noting that the inauguration of Uyo SPE aligns with state government vision.
The highpoint of the event was the inauguration of 2025/2026 Uyo Section Pioneer Board Members by the 2025 SPE Nigeria Council Chairperson Amina Danmadami.
The 2025/2026 Uyo Section Pioneer Board Members include: Nkese Essien, Section Chairman;Julia Obuotor, Program Chairperson;Isemin Isemin, Secretary; Tinuola Udoh, Treasurer; Julius Akpabio, Membership Chairman; Frank Okon, Assistant Secretary; Emmanuel Sam, Communication and Outreach Chairman; Ubong Usoro, Assistant Membership Chairman; Israel Umanah, Student Affairs Chairman, and Victor Emmah, in charge of Young Professional.
