Not less than three persons have been feared dead following accident that happened around Etim Ekpo round about as the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Akwa Ibom Command, Mr Edward Odiete, has cautioned drivers in the state against reckless driving in the state.
Odiete gave the warning due to a crash at Etim Ekpo roundabout on Nov. 11 when a truck rammed into a structure where three were feared dead.
This is contained in a statement signed by Odiete and made available to the newsmen in Uyo on Wednesday.
He said that investigation revealed that the driver was reckless and did not obey traffic rules and regulations that led to the accident.
He said that when the report of the incident was received, the FRSC operatives mobilised and moved over to attend to the situation.
He added that upon arrival at the crash scene, the injured ones were moved to nearby hospitals for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the morgue.
“A fatal crash occurred on Nov. 11 at Etim Ekpo roundabout by 1930hrs. The lone crash involved a Howo Truck that ran into structures at the roundabout.
“One female and two male adults were confirmed dead, while others sustained injuries of various degrees.
“When inquiry was made as to the cause of the crash, it was gathered that the causal factor to the crash was reckless driving that resulted in loss of control, according to eye witnesses.
“After evacuation of the victims, the road was cleared of the wreckages to enable free-flow of traffic,” Odiete said.
The sector commander further stressed that the incident could have been avoided should the driver observed certain degrees of safety measures and adhered strictly to traffic rules and regulations.
He emphasised the need for safety consciousness among road users.
Odiete urged passengers to adhere to the theme of this year’s Ember Months Campaign which is to; “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes kill more Passengers than Drivers.”
The sector commander, while commiserating with the families of the deceased, wished the injured quick recovery.
He enjoined all road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to avoid road carnage and it’s attendant lost of lives and property.
