Science and technology are vital for addressing global challenges, yet many Nigerian students lack opportunities to explore this field. Limited resources and various obstacles often hinder their ability to fully develop and demonstrate their scientific potential for innovation and societal contribution.
With a vision to bridge this gap, Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), with the support of Natural Oilfield Services Limited (NOSL) and Ibom Developers FZE, collaborated with the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education to launch their first annual Science Project Exhibition and Competition. Aligned with the World Science Day theme, “Science for and with Society,” this initiative encourages young learners to explore and experiment with scientific concepts, igniting curiosity and creativity.

Starting in July 2024, the programme engaged 14 schools from Onna, Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, and Eastern Obolo LGAs with over 1,000 students oriented on the importance of science in addressing societal challenges. VCDF provided financial and instructional support, giving each school the chance to develop their own science project for exhibition.
The programme concluded with an exhibition at the Onna Local Government Council Hall, where 96 students and 20 teachers from 12 schools displayed their innovative models to a panel of experts, educators, community members, and local leaders. Distinguished guests, including Dr. Anietie Ikot, Director of Secondary and Higher Education, mentioned that the initiative was the first of its kind as it strongly aligns with the efforts of the state government. Furthermore, Architect Mfon Akpabio, Secretary of the Onna Local Government Council, also commended VCDF for creating an enthusiastic platform for students to explore science. Architect Akpabio said “I urge these young minds to continue their pursuit of science, as a means to drive meaningful change in the nation. Your curiosity and dedication to science today are laying the foundation for innovations that can uplift and transform our country tomorrow.”
Qua Iboe Church Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo, emerged winners with their Wastewater Treatment Irrigation Prototype, while Community Secondary Commercial School, Odoro Atan, was the first runner-up with their Solar Transformer model, and the Secondary Commercial School, Ibekwe, with their Solar Car Construction project was the second runner-up.
The event was more than just about science—it was a celebration of creativity, innovation, and inspiration. VCDF’s initiative sparked hope, empowering students to see themselves as future leaders and problem-solvers, with the potential to make a lasting impact on their communities.
