A public secondary school, Community Secondary School, Aka Offot, Uyo has floored five other secondary schools in the state, including a renowned private school, Topfaith International Secondary School, to clinch 1st position in the 8th edition of National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy.
The quiz competition held on Thursday October 12 at Community Secondary School, Aka Offot, had six participating schools from different local governments.
Community Secondary School, Aka Offot emerged 1st with 75 points in the three rounds, while Topfaith International Secondary School, Mkpatak came out second, and Community Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Okubo Offot emerged second runner up.
Other participating schools include Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikot Ekpene Udo; Independent High School, Ukana and Government Technical College, Mbioto2, Etinan.
Setting the tone for the event, the Director General National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies Abuja, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman recalled that the past 6 editions of the quiz competition were usually meant for students within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), not until the National Assembly deemed it necessary to extend it to all the states.
The DG represented by Mr. Enecha Jeremiah, expressed the belief that the competition will impact positively on the students and youths of the state.
According to him, “The broad objective of the competition is to provide continued education on the legislature and broaden the knowledge of students and youths on history, practice and procedure of the legislature and encourage deeper understanding of civic and democratic governance.
“The competition will also stimulate the interest of young students in politics and make them more proactive in matters relating to legislature and democracy.”
Addressing the participating schools, the Commissioner for Education, Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Lady Rose Bassey harped on the need for society to empower and equip citizens especially, the younger generation with quality education.
She thanked the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) for organizing the quiz competition and also appreciated the teachers whom she noted have painstakingly groomed the students for the competition.
“Education plays a vital role in any given society. It equips children with the requisite knowledge, skills and critical thinking abilities which are necessary for their personal and professional growth.
“Quality Education also helps us make informed choices which navigates through life’s challenges. Since education is a veritable tool for sustainable development, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno has prioritized education in the State in the A.R.I.S.E Agenda.
“His Excellency, the Governor has also consciously re-strategized the education sector to provide a conducive teaching and learning environment by restructuring of the school environment and establishment of model schools, in each of the ten Federal constituencies in the states.
“It is noteworthy that Akwa Ibom State emerged the overall winner of last year’s National Competition and clinched the coveted Golden Trophy. The state is therefore the Defending Champion this year and we are poised to bring home the trophy a second time.
“I welcome the officials from National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies to Akwa Ibom State, and urge you to take out time to enjoy the ambience of the state.” She said.
In her opening remark, Director, State Education Quality Assurance Service (SEQAS) Dr. Roseline Mfon, appreciated the institute for making the quiz competition a reality.
She promised full support of the ministry in ensuring students from the state participate in the national quiz competition.
Reacting to the victory, one of the participating students from Community Secondary School, Aka Offot, Victor Isaac Bassey, expressed excitement that his school, which he tagged a public school, is going to represent the state in the competition.
He commended his teachers for investing time and energy to make them stand out in the competition and promised to make full proof of the opportunity the competition has offered.
“Through the help of God and serious study, I can assure Akwa Ibomites that we shall emerge first in the national competition.”
The high point of the quiz competition was issuance of certificate of participation to schools, and awards to students who answered questions from the audience.
