As the third wave of COVID-19 continues to ravaged different parts of the country with Akwa Ibom State recording 540 cases in the month of July , the state government and the State COVID-19 Management Committee seem not to do more in providing a concurrent respond to stem the spread of the virus in the state.
Findings by The Crest correspondent on Friday morning showed that, only 25 persons were admitted into the isolation centre at Ituk Mbang as at the time of this report .
Speaking with our correspondent, one of the nurses who works at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, who did not want her name on print, disclosed that people come to test for COVID-19 at the centre after which they are not admitted but are given drugs to admitter in their respective homes.
On the issue of contact tracing, “You know that contact tracing of COVID-19 was usually done by some NGOs supported by the Akwa Ibom State government.
“Since government no longer bring out money to support these NGOs, their officials have all gone. That is why there is no contact tracing”, the nurse said.
However, despite daily surge in case of COVID-19 in the state, the Akwa Ibom State government, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, are not paying attention in this direction.
For instance, last week PDP began inauguration of chapter executives of Peace Maintenance Movement, PMM, a political group to champion the Governorship candidate of the party.
In a release signed by the Hon. Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong noted,
“As the Divine Mandate completes its Agenda, there is an inevitable need to prepare for a future that will guarantee Peace, Prosperity and Sustenance of the gains made by previous administrations. That need has given birth to Peace Maintenance Movement PMM.
“To this end, the Movement, which is conceived as a potent grassroots Mobilization Movement, will commence its membership drive and inauguration of Local Government Chapters on Wednesday July 28,2021. The team will berth first at Ikono by noon, before moving to INI by 3pm.
“The coordinators have been mandated to ensure that COVID-19 protocols are observed”.
Our correspondent observed that despite instructions on COVID-19 protocol , the two venues for the event were crowded with no social distance as most of those who attended the events did not were nose masks.
Also, the APC, not mindful of the prevailing COVID-19 threat, organised ward congresses in the state with total disregard to COVID-19 protocol.
APC members were seen in various locations struggling on queque to vote for their candidates.
Aside this, there was a protest at the party secretariat wherein those involved showed no concern on the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile the spike in cases of COVID-19 in the state in July was alarming according to records made available by World Health Organization Nigeria.
