The Uyo Local Government Council Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, on Monday, June 30, 2025, commissioned the fully remodelled Uyo City Motor Park and disbursed a total of 100 million naira in business support grants to 162 indigenous business owners across the local government area. The day also marked the official handover of a 500KVA power substation to Ikot Akpan Oku and Obio Offot communities, as well as the refurbished Uyo Traditional Rulers Council Complex, all under the council’s ongoing development agenda.
Speaking during the commissioning of the park and its facilities, Dr. Udo explained that the dilapidated condition of the former facility had encouraged touts to operate from the roadside. He advised transporters to make use of the park now that it is functional.

“Here was flooded, which stopped motorists and commuters from accessing the park. This project is like opening up the ground and burying money, but I had promised myself that if there is an opportunity for me, I’ll reactivate the park and to the glory of God, we have been able to provide an asphalted access road with side drains to take out water whenever it rains.
I appreciate Uyo people for the opportunity given to me to come for a second term, which has helped us to touch more lives, as well as empower business operators in our local government with the sum of N100m to boost their businesses”, he said.
Representing the Governor, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, at the event, the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, commended the Uyo Council Chairman for the array of impactful projects executed under his leadership.

While setting the tone for the ceremony earlier, Mr. Ubong Udofia, Secretary of the Council, praised the Chairman’s visionary leadership, describing it as intentional and people-focused. He emphasised that the council’s ability to hand over major community infrastructure and empower 162 business owners in a single day was unprecedented in Uyo’s history. The grant categories included ₦2 million, ₦1 million, ₦500,000 and ₦250,000, showing a wide-reaching impact on the local economy.
The once dilapidated park has been transformed with a 200-meter internal road and drainage system for the rainy season. According to the council’s Works Supervisor, the new facility includes six administrative offices, 16 kiosk spots, restaurants, ten toilets, two gatehouses for security, and well-lit surroundings to support nighttime business. The development aims to restore organised transportation and reduce illegal loading points in Uyo.

The Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Anthony Luke, noted that the Uyo park was the only fully functional government-owned motor park in the entire state, and praised the Chairman’s commitment to infrastructure.
The event ended on a celebratory note as cheques were presented to grant beneficiaries, affirming Uyo Council’s commitment to grassroots development and economic empowerment.
