The Federal Government of Nigeria has strengthened its partnership with the Federal Polytechnic Ukana to promote entrepreneurship among young people, as the institution continues to champion skill-based education through national programmes like YOUWIN. Speaking during the YOUWIN Enterprise Education and Free Book Distribution Exercise at the 250-capacity lecture hall of the Main Campus, the Rector, Mrs. Eduma Essien—represented by the Registrar, Mr. Idhigu Lucky—urged students to fully embrace entrepreneurial training as a reliable way to reduce unemployment in the country.
She commended the Federal Government for sustaining the YOUWIN programme, noting that it has made a positive impact on Nigerian youths. Mrs. Essien restated the polytechnic’s commitment to ensuring that students graduate not only with certificates but also with practical skills that will make them self-reliant and competitive in today’s economy.
Speaking to the students, the YOUWIN resource person for Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Imaobong Akpan, explained that the YOUWIN (Youth Enterprise With Innovation in Nigeria) programme is a Federal Government initiative designed to identify, train, and support young Nigerians with viable business ideas. Managed by the Federal Ministry of Finance, the programme provides training, mentorship, and in some cases, startup grants to help young entrepreneurs grow sustainable businesses.
Mrs. Akpan stated that YOUWIN has already trained thousands of youths across the country, with many beneficiaries now running successful ventures in sectors such as agriculture, technology, manufacturing, fashion, and services. She noted that the programme focuses on empowering youths with the knowledge and confidence they need to transform ideas into profitable enterprises. She also emphasized that YOUWIN remains open and ready to support as many aspiring entrepreneurs as possible.
In the vote of thanks, the Acting Director of the Entrepreneurial Development Centre, Mr. Jude Inyangetoh, expressed appreciation to YOUWIN for choosing the institution. He assured that students would take advantage of the lessons and opportunities provided to improve their entrepreneurial skills.
The event ended with the distribution of free books to all participating students, aimed at further encouraging learning and innovation among the youths. The event was well attended by officials and students of the polytechnic, including the Acting Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Fred Itotaziba.
