Barely 12 days into the month of June, both teaching and non-teaching staff of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) are yet to receive their May salary even as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), suspends its indefinite strike action.

It can be recalled that the Akwa Ibom State Government had conducted Biometric Exercise for staff of the University in April with the hope of paying May salary with the new minimum wage.
But fillers around government circle indicated that the salary consultant that handled the verification exercise was sacked by the state government and it is alleged the consultant left with the staff data.

Meanwhile, despite the delay in salary payment, ASUU has suspended its indefinite strike which began last week to allow for negotiations with representatives of the state government.
A letter dated June 10, signed by the Branch Chairperson and the Secretary, Comrade Namso Frank and Comrade Imo Sandy, reads in part:
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Akwa Ibom State University Branch (ASUU-AKSU) at its Emergency Congress of June 10, 2025, reviewed the achievements from its industrial action that commenced on June 3, 2025 and resolved that;
“Whereas Government’s attention has been duly attracted and negotiations on its demands is set to begin;
“To pave way for a conducive environment for both parties for the said negotiations,
“The indefinite strike is hereby suspended;
“All academic staff are by this notice enjoined to resume full academic activities from Wednesday June 11, 2025.”
